Hitched: Kendahl + Brett

Hitched: Kendahl + Brett

A Winter wedding like no other! On December 29th, 2019 Kendahl and Brett became husband and wife! Their day went by without a hitch as they started their new chapter together. Read on to hear all about their love story and magical wedding day, as told by Brett!

How and when did you both meet? We met through a mutual friend. It happened when Kendahl was still in university and came home for the Christmas holidays, back in 2013. One of her classmates from the University of Waterloo was also from Saskatoon and I have known them since high school. On one snowy December evening, I invited friends over for a casual get-together of pizza and cards. Kendahl tagged along with said mutual friend; we made eye contact and the rest is history!

Tell us about the proposal. I proposed on Christmas Eve, 2017! I surprised Kendahl with a present even though we had agreed not to buy each other gifts that year. Kendahl was upset that I had one-upped her, until she opened the present to find a ring box. Kendahl immediately knew what it was, and said YES before opening the box!

Since it was Christmas time, we were immediately able to share the exciting news with family!

Tell us about the engagement ring/wedding bands, the process of picking it out, your experience at GMG, etc. Originally we went together to browse at GMG in February 2017 “just for fun.” We spent at least 30 minutes trying on different styles of rings, until Kendahl fell in love with a halo design. I spent the summer working with Sandy on a custom ring, going back and forth over ideas and designs. Finally, at the end of the summer, the ring arrived! It looked much bigger than I had imagined, but Kendahl loved it all the more once she saw it.

What were your colours and theme? What adjectives would you use to describe your wedding? Burgundy and rose gold; New Years Eve sparkle; Winter Wonderland but not Christmas. The goal for the reception was to have great food, and fun on the dance floor. Success!

Give us a brief overview of how your day was. Kendahl and the bridesmaids met at Urban Vogue for hair first thing in the morning. The maid of honour brought Kendahl her favourite morning coffee, a Flat White with Bride written on the cup! The ladies proceeded back to my parent’s home to continue getting ready and share a few munchies. Sarah Rolles Photography was onsite ready to capture heartfelt moments of the bridal party thank you gifts, and first look of the bride.

The groomsmen and I started the day at my best man’s house getting ready. Sarah Rolles was there to capture all the laughs from ties to pocket squares to sharing a shot of liquor.

Limelight Limos supplied a spacious limo bus for the bridal party to cruise around Saskatoon. Right on schedule, the bridal party (minus Kendahl) rode to the Church via bus. I felt surprisingly nervous while I waited with the groomsmen for the ceremony to start. Kendahl arrived last and was secretly led into a side room in the Church where she met up with her Dad, the flower girl and her bridesmaids. Flowers in hand, we walked one by one down the aisle to Ludovico Einaudi's I Giorni. The ceremony was heartfelt and personal. We co-wrote our vows and selected unique readings.  With great jubilation we were announced as husband and wife, and exited the church to the tune of “Go the Distance” from Disney`s Hercules!

Family pictures were taken at the Bessborough, after which the bridal party continued on to the Innovation Place Garden Park, President Murray Park, and on the Meewasin Valley trail. After being thoroughly chilled all afternoon, Kendahl and I retreated to Boom Town for a few more vintage looking (and warmer) photos.

A fun dancing atmosphere was paramount and Night Owl delivered! We opened the dance floor with our own choreographed first dance: a cha-cha to the acoustic version of “Seeing Stars” by Borns. We were very thankful to our friends who recorded the dance so we could keep it as a memento of the Big Day!

Are there any surprises, special moments, things that didn’t go quite is planned, or funny stories that happened to make the day extra special? Everything surprisingly went as planned! No hiccups or disasters that we were aware of. Infact, many friends and family commented on how well organized the day was. We were a bit colder than planned at the end of the day, but warmed up at the reception. Hindsight, we probably should have worn mittens.

Surprise! Brett’s dad recorded a video clip of the bridal party walking down the aisle. A complete surprise since we didn’t have a videographer.  The video was gifted to us after the wedding.

What were some of the things that made your day unique? We had a giant dice that would be rolled to determine if the bride and groom would kiss, or if the roller would have to tell a story about the bride OR groom, or if the roller would have to wear a viking hat. The order in which supper was served was determined by how well the guests performed in trivia based on our relationship and favourite TV shows. The wedding favours were cookies baked by our moms: shortbread (Kendahl’s favourite) and cracker jack (Brett’s favourite).

What were your favourite memories and moments? We had a few favourite moments: being announced husband and wife by Rev Daryl Woods and exiting the Church was exhilarating!! The first dance was great, we took dance lessons to learn how to cha cha! The shoe game was a blast, one of the bridesmaids compile the questions to keep it secret and our reactions spontaneous!

Do you have any advice for future couples? Regardless of how smoothly things run, your wedding day is between you and your partner. It’s your day, just have fun and remember to dance!
