A Perfect Pairing

1. How did it begin?

We met on Bumble. After about a week of back-and-forth texting, we found that we had a lot in common and the conversations were just so natural. We decided to meet at O’Shea’s pub, where Jaret said he would see me coming, which at the time made no sense but I went with it.

Walking up to the pub I saw a guy leaning against a bike post and wondered if that was who I was meeting.  He stood up and I remember thinking about how tall he was compared to my shortness.

He told me he was 6’9 (I’m 5’2) and asked me if I wanted to join him for a drink.   After about 5 minutes of talking, we couldn’t find out enough about each other.  At the end of our date, Jaret walked me to my vehicle and then went to his truck.

Before I got home Jaret had already texted that he had a fun night with me and wanted to have another date soon. From then on, we were inseparable and continued to talk daily about everything and anything.

A union meant to last

2. What are some activities and interests that you two enjoy?

Cooking, going to the movies, walking around Stonebridge, making Rosa (Jaret’s cat) do funny stuff, going to Indigo and then Starbucks right after, snuggling in bed, and watching a show… but most of all we enjoy each other’s company.

We have our differences; Jaret really likes video games and Shelbie loves murder mysteries, so we give each other a healthy amount of space. But we also find compromises and make things work!

3. What was the most memorable part of your wedding day?

Jaret: It all happened so fast, the only things I remember were how angelic Shelbie looked, how our family was all there and everyone looked beautiful and very happy, and the sun was in a position right above the minister’s head, so I couldn’t see the minister… just a silhouette.

Oh, and Harland did his best man duties AND flower girl duties (and chucked the basket mid-walking when he ran out of flowers! Haha). It was 15 minutes, but it felt like 30 seconds. I remember everything and I will cherish those memories.

Shelbie: The most memorable part of the day for me was walking down the aisle, feeling so much love from all our guests, and locking eyes with my soon-to-be husband.

4. Any insights on wedding planning for those just starting the journey?

Have a destination wedding! Any place you choose will have planned and executed beautiful weddings for years.

You still get choices on essential aspects of your day, but in the end, you don't have to worry about set up, take down, food, and dance floors.

It saves a ton of money and allows you to have a great vacation while staying longer for a honeymoon without family around.

5. What traditions from your family of origin did you bring into your marriage?

Jaret:  From two hard-working Ukrainian families; our love of cooking, our fondness of perogies, strong work ethic, sensibility (for the most part!) in saving money, and keeping friends and family first.

Shelbie:  From my family, learning that real love is about giving and compromise.  We share each other’s hopes/dreams and love unconditionally.

A match made in heaven

6. What is the best piece of relationship advice you were given?

Marry your best friend. Love will change through the years with highs and lows. Your friendship will carry you through.

- my Uncle, but passed down from his Grandma
