HITCHED: KENZIE + MITCH

Join us in welcoming Kenzie and Mitch to the blog.  They're sharing special memories from their big day as they celebrate their first anniversary!

How did you meet?

We met in University 8 years ago, while going through the education program! We actually figured out we had many mutual friends even though Mitch grew up in a small town south of Swift Current and I grew up in Saskatoon.

How and when did you know he/she was the one?

There wasn’t really any exact moment for either of us. We just enjoyed spending time together, sharing many laughs and we always made time for each other’s families. Seeing how Mitch responded to me having 4 older brothers was a true test - and he passed!

Tell us about the proposal!

On Tuesday April 21st, I got ready for work and went on my way thinking it was just a regular day. By the end of the school day Mitch had texted me saying we should go for supper at a usual Vietnamese place we visited often near our house. I had agreed to this so when we both got home we got ready to walk to the nearby restaurant. I thought it was a little weird Mitch kept going out the front door to “check the weather” and see if he should wear a jacket for our walk. Although it didn’t faze me, I later found out he was putting a key into our mailbox for his sister to get in. We headed out the door and enjoyed our meal as usual. On the way back home things were normal and I thought we were heading home to watch TV for the rest of the night. When he opened up the front door, there were roses leading up the stairs. My first reaction was “oh my god, someone broke in”! After I stood there in shock for a while, Mitch told me to follow the flowers up the stairs that lead to our bedroom. When I walked through the door a bouquet with a small little note that said “Will you Marry Me?” was on our night stand. When I turned around Mitch was on one knee and the rest is history!

.... and that ring

The ring is beautiful! It was exactly what I was wanting. He did a great job picking it out with the help of Sandy from GMG.  We both returned to GMG for our wedding bands and couldn’t be happier!

Tell us a bit about the day

We were married in Saskatoon on July 16, 2016. The ceremony was at the Queen’s House, outside in their beautiful gardens overlooking the river. Then we moved over to TCU Place for the reception and dance. The day was absolutely perfect! All the girls came to my parents’ house to start getting ready in the morning. After a few mimosa’s, laughs, many nervous moments and several photos it was off to the Queen’s House we went. Both our families have Scottish ancestry and I grew up Highland dancing ever since I was 5. With this being so strong in my roots, I knew I had to include a pipe band to play me down the aisle. It was perfect and truly a dream come true! After we said our “I do’s”, we cruised around town in a limo bus taking several pictures with our wedding party. Then we arrived at TCU Place for the real party!

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

I think the most memorable moment for me was walking down the aisle to the pipe band playing. A solo piper started off while all the girls walked down the aisle and then the entire band joined in once I started walking with both my parents. It was an amazing feeling to have! My garter also fell off during the walk, which added some humor that was much needed at that moment! Everything about the day was amazing though from the ceremony, to the reception and the dance!

Mitch’s favorite part about the wedding was our ceremony. We both loved the beauty of the location and how it all came together. He had many laughs at the reception with all the great speeches that were done and loved tearing up the dance floor with family and friends!

We'd love to hear how wedding planning went for you - did it go as planned?

Planning went great! We are both fairly easy going people and didn’t want to complicate things too much. Although by the end of it all, we couldn’t wait for the day to arrive so we could be done with all the last-minute wedding stuff. We loved how everything turned out and wouldn’t have changed anything looking back on our special day!

How did you celebrate with friends and family?

We had a smaller dinner, which included immediate family and aunties and uncles only. After dinner the rest of our guests arrived for speeches and the dance. All the speeches were extremely well done and received many laughs from the crowd. Once the dance started, I put on my dance shoes and did a few Highland dances with my friends. My nieces, who were the flower girls also joined in on the last dance. When these performances were done the DJ took the night away and the dance floor was never left empty. It was such a fun night that we both will never forget!
