Home for Dinner

Home for Dinner

As a staff here at GMG Jewellers, we were looking for a way to give back to the community and when we heard about the Home for Dinner Program at Ronald McDonald House we knew that we had to get involved. So this past Sunday, we arrived bright and early to cook brunch for all of the families staying at The House - which to our delight was at full capacity. We knew it was going to be a special day, as it’s not very often that the families are prepared a home-cooked brunch on a Sunday morning.

If you haven’t heard about the Home for Dinner Program here is a little about how it works. Your group plans the menu, buys the groceries, and cooks the food right in the community kitchen. It’s that simple. All of the dishes and appliances that you could ever imagine needing are provided for you, and RMHC-SK staff is on hand to help with any questions you may have. At first we thought putting the menu together would be the hardest part, but there were no shortage of ideas as to what we could make and serve. From pancakes and sausage, to bacon and hash browns we wanted to do it all – and of course no brunch would be complete without a little bit of ice cream for dessert.

This was a really great experience and would love to do it again! It amazed me to see how much support this House gets from our community and I was so glad we chose this charity to support. As a family, we actually stayed at RMH in both Winnipeg and Edmonton when our daughter had heart surgery. It was truly a home away from home and a blessing to have that option.

A big highlight of the day was getting to tour The House – which has more than doubled in the number of families it can host since its expansion in 2014 (13 to 34 Rooms). We marveled at the comforts and care provided to the families at The House, and that made us even more grateful to have a hand in making The House a "Home Away from Home" for these families. One of the most impressive things we learned while at The House was that the cost of the expansion was entirely covered through donations. We were in awe! This just goes to show the love and support that comes from our community and our province.

Getting the opportunity to go in with the GMG team to help give all the people staying at the house a nice big brunch was a very fun thing and I would love to do it again! I will definitely be going back to help them again with the GMG crew or on my own time.

If you haven’t had a chance get involved with The House, we would encourage you to make a donation or volunteer your time there. It is so rewarding to give back to the families at The House, and getting involved with the Home for Dinner Program is something we would recommend to any business or group. Our experience at the Ronald McDonald House Charities Saskatchewan was touching for every member of our staff, and now The House is even more near and dear to us. It truly is The House That Love Built.
