Hitched: Angela & Sam

Hitched: Angela & Sam

We're so excited to welcome Angela and Sam to In Bloom blog.  This thrifty bride and super crafty groom managed to DIY their way to a stunning wedding that cost under $4000.  This gorgeous country-chic celebration came together with the Bride's incredible vision along with the help of many handy family and friends.  We absolutely adore this wedding - from the showstopping chandelier to the intricate flower wall, every single detail is perfection.  Keep scrolling to hear all about their big day and see for yourself how these two lovebirds crafted the perfect rustic reception!

Where were you married?

Our wedding was split. On July 17 we were married into our Ukrainian Orthodox Church at Belyki in Borden and then on the 23 of July we were officiated at Rustic Nine Golf, in North Battleford and also hosted our reception.

Tell us a little about the proposal

Sam told me we were going soil testing at his dads and he needed my help.  We arrived to his parents and he basically pinned it out to the field with me dragging behind him with his little kit of things he gathered from home.  We headed out towards the peas and Sam said,  'well, I guess here is fine'  as he unziped his case and handed me an enamel bowl and then pulled out a cottage cheese container and got down on one knee.  Inside of it was the ring!  He told me a story about where we were and then told me that he couldn't imagine his life with any other person and asked me to marry him!

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding day?

During our ceremony there was a huge storm that blew over and it stopped just after Father said we were husband and wife.  When we exited the church it was no longer pouring.  Some say it's good luck to have rain on your wedding day.

A lot of work went into crafting the wedding, tell us a bit about it

We had a crowd of just under 100 people.  The groomsmen were my husband’s band members and the bridesmaids and maids of honour were my sisters and two friends.  The whole wedding wouldn't have happened without the help of our families and friends.  The meal was made by my (ange's) parents and we had some family friends come to set the meal out and make sure everything was prepared. My mom also made the bridesmaid dresses.  She tailored them to fit each and every body for a fraction of the cost that a designer dress would have cost.  My Dad made the centrepieces himself after painstakingly putting up with me and my demands.  My sister Deanna and I made the beautiful flower back drop behind our sweet heart table. She recently found her crafty side and decided I had to have a paper flower wall.  A 10x7 paper flower wall....Sam and I made the chandelier out of many feet of sisal twine, hot glue and expensive light bulbs - lol! I wanted something extravagant that would bring the warmth of our two families together.  I felt the chandelier lighting was perfect!  We also repurposed some old spools for our cake, sweetheart, and popcorn table.  I had Sam construct a wash station for the guests to use out of repurposed pallets and old cistern pumps!  He said it was unacceptable for our guests to not have running water - lol!  Sam and my Dad constructed a rustic bar from pallets for the corner of the barn –and my brother made a custom watering hole sign for us!  The table cloths were sewn and dyed by my Mom and I.  I couldn't justify renting for twice the price I could make them for.  I also couldn't find anything right for my colour theme and that was chic enough to make the evening feel grand.  I collected China, silverware and character items for months from thrift stores and buy and sell pages, antique stores and garage sales.  It was perfect!  There are so many little things that so many helped with too, my older sister made the barn sign mason jar, the cake topper, my paper flowers, the veil wreath.  My mom sewed basically every string of fabric you see in the photos from the curtains to the bridesmaid dresses to the veil I was wearing and even the top of my dress!  She tailored the groomsmen pants, made the ring bearers pants, my Niece’s cute little outfit,  on top of organizing and preparing food!  My Dad worked so hard to craft the details of tables and he made all the wonderful midnight luncheon meat!  I can't forget Sam's parents!  His dad devoted hours to listening to my demands about decorating and even bought a black cord to plug the chandelier in when I told them blue wasn't going to cut it.  I had a friend make the perfect Shepard hooks for the runway for my ceremony so I could hang my fancy mason jars on them! We really can’t thank everyone enough that came and helped make our day special.
