GMG's Custom Ring Process
If you are interested in a custom ring, you might have a few questions about how it works. Well, we are here to answer all your questions about the process! Custom rings are a fantastic route to go for both the engagement ring and the wedding bands. You can take bits and pieces from rings you like to build your dream ring - how cool is that? Once the design is finalized, the process is about four weeks. By selecting a custom ring, you can be involved from start to finish and see your unique treasure develop in front of your eyes. Another great benefit to a custom ring is that you can bring new life to an antique or family heirloom to add sentimental value to your ring. We can also use recycled yellow gold to make your piece to be as environmentally conscious as possible.
Step 1 – Getting Inspiration
The first step in the process is getting inspiration to build your design, so grab you engagement ring/wedding band Pinterest board (we all know you have one!) and let’s get designing. With this stage, you can select everything you want to be a part of your ring and we can make it happen.
Step 2 - Selecting your Centre piece
Before we can start designing, you need to pick out the centre piece of the ring, the sparkling stone. This could be a diamond or gemstone depending on the look you are going for. You will also need to pick out accent stones as well, if applicable.
Step 3 – Building the Design
Now that we know everything that you want, we can start building the masterpiece! The designer will take all of your inspiration for the ring to build a 3D rendering of the design for you to view. The 3D rendering will show you detailed images of what your custom ring will look like.
Step 4 – Cutting the Wax
Once you approve the digital design of your custom ring, it will be converted to a wax model. The wax can be cut two ways - by a milling machine/printer or hand carved by one of our amazing goldsmiths! When the wax is completed, you’ll have a replica of your custom ring that you can hold in your hand and try on.
Step 5 – Casting the Ring
Now to cast your wax ring into a metal ring. An investment is made out of plaster with the wax ring inside to create our mould. We then melt the metal of your choosing and pour it in. This will melt the wax away and you are left with a gorgeous metal ring. Now its time to set all of the beautiful stones that you selected into place, and bring your ring to life!
